Home Charging

The range of products for EV charging is expanding all the time. By using EV Miles you can be confident that you are benefitting from our up to the minute knowledge and expertise.

EV chargers for home use are evolving all the time.

A home charger puts you in charge

The power supplied to your EV from a home charger is 7.2kW, roughly equal to having your cooker on full! This makes filling your battery in several hours possible, depending on the make of vehicle, rather than eight or more hours using a 13A domestic plug and socket.

Find the Charger That Suits Your Needs

Grid based

Simple charger with RCD protection, eg. the ROLEC 32A homesmart wallpod.

Draws power from the mains. Does what it says on the tin.

Installed price – from £549 (including government grant of £350.)

PV / Grid

This type of charger can draw power from the mains and load balance with electricity from your PV panels. On a sunny day you might literally be able to drive on sunshine! There are a range of manufacturers such as MyEnergi and Hypervolt (both made in the UK.)

Installed price typically from £749 (including government grant of £350.)

PV / Grid / battery

Off-set the electricity you generate with your panels and save in your battery bank for domestic use in the evening. Your EV will charge up using any remaining battery power, before topping up from the mains overnight.

Some energy providers are offering cheap over-night tariffs for EV charging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my install qualify for the £350 government charge point grant?

Probably. For domestic, as long as you have off-street parking, most chargers and cars qualify, including leased and company cars. Phone us for a chat about your EV charging possibilities, if you live within about 10 miles of Malvern, Worcestershire.

I park in the street. Can I have a charger?

Unfortunately not – from us. But local authorities are being encouraged by government to take up grants being provided by the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles, shortened rather excitingly to OZEV. So agitate your local council to get some ORCS! (On-street Residential Chargepoint Scheme). If you live in a rural area then call Steve, and he will assist you as this falls under one of his interests – bringing infrastructure to rural areas.

What are the savings of having an electric vehicle?

Well, you save on road tax and on the congestion charges into London and other cities (Birmingham is planning to start one soon.) Electric cars are cheaper to run over their lifetime than petrol or diesel. Special EV tariffs are available from your energy provider to make your night time electricity cheaper, so you can save even more! Electric cars cost less to maintain, having fewer parts, although just like all other vehicles they have to pass their MOT. The EDF energy site has a lot of info in this and is a good starting point – https://www.edfenergy.com/electric-cars

What is the fastest car charger?

For domestic charging generally 7.2kW although there are some larger houses with a 3 phase supply where a 22kW 3 phase charger would be possible.
As to the speed of the charging, this depends on what vehicle you have, as they all have different charging capabilities. So, it pays to look at the small print about which chargers your vehicle can use and how long it will take to charge based on the various types of charger.

At full output of about 7kW, you will get about 30mph out of your charger. Quite impressive considering it doesn’t appear to move!

How long will it take to install my charger?

After an initial phone call, we will produce an estimate for you based on the information you give us, and then if you wish to proceed we will arrange with you to visit your home and take a look at the site.

We aim to get from your first phone call to a visit within a week and then once everything is agreed have your charger installed within another week, so generally your charger should be installed within two weeks of your first contact with us. The actual install generally takes between a few hours and a day, depending on the site issues.
